The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Dr. Denis Mukwege, condemns the tragic attack in Goma and calls for action. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 2018, Dr. Denis Mukwege, has emotionally responded to the recent attack by the M23/RDF rebel group on the Mugunga displaced camp in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo. In a poignant statement, the renowned women’s advocate expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, while urging immediate action to end the violence and impunity prevailing in the African Great Lakes region.
Dr. Mukwege emphasized the crucial importance of respecting the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law to protect vulnerable populations. He made a heartfelt appeal to the international community to take concrete measures to put an end to the repeated aggressions and Rwandan interference in the DRC.
Furthermore, Dr. Mukwege urged international institutions and states to suspend any form of military assistance to Rwanda as long as it continues to support the M23 and keep its troops on Congolese soil. He stressed the need for severe political and economic sanctions to exert pressure on the Kigali regime and break the destructive cycle of violence in the region.
