East African Community EAC: « It is in order to boost the economy of the eastern part of the DRC that we accept this membership. » President Paul KAGAME.
The Rwandan president staying in Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo participated in a press conference with his Congolese counterpart Felix TSHISEKEDI this Saturday, June 26, 2021.
Behind this integration, notes Félix Tshisekedi, the DRC will benefit from several advantages, including the much sought-after peace in the eastern part.
» I will give you an example, for the same product imported by two traders, one Rwandan living in Rubavu and the other Congolese, living in Goma, a product that enters through the customs of Mombasa (Kenya) for example. You will understand that, as things stand, the Congolese are at a disadvantage. The Rwandan is already in the EAC, he benefits from the advantages of the customs tariff while the Congolese who has the same product sells it more expensive in Goma. You can see that in this situation, the consumer will go to Gisenyi, which is the next door to obtain this product at a low price than in Goma. This is just one example that illustrates the fact that by harmonizing our tariffs, we will boost the economy of eastern Congo. » said the Congolese president who also believes that the latter will serve the easy return of peace to the east of the Drc.
For the Rwandan president, the DRC’s accession to the East Africa Community is made to facilitate the economy of the eastern part of the DRC.
« You know that where there is economic activity, there is interest, everyone needs peace for business to work. We have an excellent minister for foreign trade, who has already proved what he is capable of in the process of developing Zlecaf. We will move on to the discussions to see how we will harmonize our economic policies And I am very confident that the talks will be successful, » concluded DRC President. told president TSHISEKEDI.
Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda are the countries that make up this EAC East African Community.
